An Indonesian doctor rotavirus Researcher Received International Award

     Professor of Faculty of Medicine, University of Gadjah Mada (UGM), Prof Dr Sri Suparyati, received an international award from the Asian Pacific Pediatric Association (Appa) as a pediatrician.

Yati received the award for the category of Pediatric Award. "I am regarded as a pediatrician is most prominent during the last three years," he said as quoted ugm.ac.id site, Wednesday, November 4, 2009.

He received the award in Shanghai, China, on October 4 to 18, 2009. He is one of 12 recipients of the award is given once every three years. They were selected from 2500 pediatrician Asia-Pacific.

The award was the fruit of their work for nearly 40 years researching diarrheal disease in children. Together with Prof. Ruth Bishop of Australia, he studied rotavirus infection in patients with diarrhea in Indonesia. The result is expressed as a major cause of rotavirus diarrhea cases.

     He said most babies with diarrhea caused by rotavirus has a lower quality of life. Infants experienced continuous vomiting, defecation water, and difficulty eating. Soft bowel was not functioning properly.

The results were also encouraging the Government of Indonesia to produce rotavirus vaccine with a fairly cheap price. Therefore, the existing vaccine for diarrhea are relatively expensive. In collaboration with Melbourne University and PT Biofarma, the vaccine will be marketed in Indonesia from 2012
